#S1E4 Against the War & Youth

Transcription of the episode #S1E4

Opening: Clementino

GoOooOooOOooOoooOOoOod Morning Vietnam and Welcome Back to MU-SI-TA-LY the Best Radio Show ever, about Italian Music, hosted by me. And who am EEEEI?
Meh, I am Cocopraise

Sorry, I was trying to speak English with a Pugliese accent.
The accent of the beautiful region of Apulia, well known for many amazing things like the Trulli of Alberobello, the Cilento area, the delicious olive oil, for its amazing coastline with over 800 kilometres across the Adriatic and the Ionio Sea and of course for Lu Mare, Lu Sule, Lu Ientu.

BTW this is the title of a song released by Après La Classe, a ska band coming from Lecce. This is one of the songs we shared through the Official Musitaly Facebook Page. Like it, if you want to get the songs we publish daily.

Sorry, Amici Pugliesi for my bad accent…

Ok… As you know, this is the only radio show that presents you weekly and very fast to 5 of the best unknown Italian songs abroad as 5 shoots!

So, let’s shoot the first one.

His name is Clemente Maccaro but he is well known with the stage name of Clementino

He comes from the suburbs of the beautiful city of Naples and he belongs to the penultimate generation of Italian rappers.

The name of the song is Lo Strano Caso di Iena White which we can translate as The strange case of the white hyena

It’s a classic rapper song about the rap game… in fact, it’s mainly addressed to other rappers. To be honest there is nothing new in the lyrics but the sound of this song is pure energy …

Ladies and Gentlemen directly from the year 2015, Clementino…

Part 2: Fabrizio De André

So.. what’s your first reaction after this song? If you are feeling as Shocked as the former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi following Brexit Party victory after the historical UK referendum, please spam the WWW with the hashtag #feelingshockedasrenzi

Ok … to introduce you to the second topic of this episode Songs Against the War, let’s finally go and listen to one of the most important Italian song-writers.

You must know that in every single country in the world, even in the Belpaese there are many singers liked and disliked by the people. Of course! BUT… if there is a songwriter who puts everyone in agreement in Italy… well, that person is absolutely Fabrizio De André.

He was born in Genova in 1940 and died in 1999, Fabrizio Cristiano De André, published many songs and he is STILL considered one of the most influential and important Italian songwriters.

He started his career in 1960 and since then he released 13 album records and many other songs.

I know he deserves more than a special episode of Musitaly and I promise you it will happen very soon. For this reason, I apologize in advance to all the people who will tell me I had to talk more about him. Sorry Guys. I Still Love You!

BTW, Faber, as his dear friend Paolo Villaggio, an actor well known for its Fantozzi’s saga, liked to call him, De Andrè was also known for his activism about pacifism.

One of his most successful songs, in fact, is undoubtedly La Guerra di Piero, Piero’s War.

This song describes the moment of a specific reflection of a soldier sad, disgusted and tired of what he saw during the war as the people he killed.

Because of this particular moment, the author, like the soldier’s conscience, sings Stop Piero. Stop now before it’s too late.

But maybe, due to the soldier’s deep commitment, he continued his march towards the border.

That day, a May spring day, Piero noticed an enemy soldier with his same mood and precisely because of his thoughts, Piero began to think about how to kill his enemy by gently avoiding his pain.

The singer/consciousness sings Shoot him, Piero. Shoot him now. Before it’s too late.

Piero was planning to shoot him on his forehead otherwise directly on his heart. That way, his enemy would quickly die.

However, despite Piero’s concern, his enemy noting Piero and he didn’t serve the same thoughtfulness. Piero’s enemy immediately shot Piero.

So the song ends with the last thought of Piero who also thinks of Ninetta, maybe his love.

Part 3: Antonello Venditti

Well… What do you think about this song? I like it very much for its meaning and because of my mother, well known as Bella di Figlio…

So she played this song many times when I was a Baby Coco. Don’t forget to follow me @cocopraise

Anyway… I remind you that on Musitaly.Com you can find all the lyrics of the song played weekly with their translations.

Ok and now let’s move on to another great Italian singer and pianist. His name is Antonello Venditti and he is a sort of King of Rome. Why? Because he wrote the official anthem of Roma Football Team.

Well, Beautiful People… you must know that in the wonderful city of Rome there are only two Faiths: “Romanisti”, Rome Football Team supporters and “Laziali”, Lazio Football Team supporters. The other Team of the Capital of Italy.

I lived in Rome for a few years and I can assure you this is a serious topic. I heard stories about some trouble during the Sunday launch, a typical Italian time when families get together.

I have also heard embarrassing situations when a daughter first introduces her boyfriend to her father. And do you know what the first question is: which team do you support?

Well, who knows if the same happened to Sara, the protagonist of the next song.

Sara is still studying in high school but she got pregnant and the words of the song come from her boyfriend, older than her.

In fact, he says I would like to do a lot of things in this kind of situation but I have to get the degree first. Maybe one day he will marry Sara, also making Sara’s mother happy… In the meantime, Sara, please don’t listen to your friends…

Well… Guys.. when you are young… Sometimes it happens…

Part 4: JovaLigaPelù

Et voilà. Les jeux sont fait ..that’s it.. My French language is over.

Ok … We are almost at the end of this episode and I didn’t remind you yet of the official hashtags:

#cocochosebetter if you are not enjoying the songs and please tell me why

#cocoyoutheking if you are enjoying them

#cocospeakbetter if I make English mistakes …

Vabbe’… Time of the fourth shoot. The next song is sung by three protagonists of modern Italian Pop Music. Although they started their careers singing in different musical genres.

I still remember the Summer of ‘99. And… Instead of a guitar like Bryan Adams in the song Summer of ‘69, I was playing vinyl records on Technics SL 1210 like a proud and Old Fashioned DJ.
I didn’t have a rock band and I haven’t met a girl yet who told me it would last forever. I would have met her later in the years but then she left me.

Vabbè that summer, exactly in that summer while in the European Community, without the Euro currency, everybody was living their normal life, not too far from there something was happening that we will always remember as the Yugoslav Wars.

In this context, Jovanotti, Ligabue and Piero Pelù released the song Il Mio nome è Mai Più donating all the earnings to “Emergency” the humanitarian NGO founded in 1994 that provides free medical care to the victims of war, poverty and landmines.

Part 5:

Ok… what do you think about the song? I really love this song very much and, please don’t judge me… despite the beautiful purpose of the initiative… When I listen to the beginning of Piero Pelu’s part of the song… Every time, believe me, every time … I think always at Morpheus scream in the Matrix scene when Neo and Trinity walked into that building SPACCANDO TUTTO. Destroying everything.

Ok… last shot of the day and let’s go back to the second topic of the episode: Youth.

The singer of the next song reported on his IG account that he has already got his 15 minutes of fame with the Album “Porno e Rancori” released in 2019. To be honest I really think that record it’s interesting. The Cosmopolitan song, just to give you an idea, has an interesting concept between music, video and lyric.

But today we will listen to Quasi 18, Almost Eighteen. This is a song about the hopes and fears of a teenager close to her 18 birthday. This age is pretty important for the Italian teenager because it represents the first step toward adulthood. The same age to get a driver license and the same age you think you can do whatever you want.

In Arte Gibilterra – Quasi 18

Closing Episode #S1E4

OoOooOOooOOooOOOoOOooOOok! This one was the last one. The last one for today, of course.

As always I will wait for you next week. In the meantime remember you are Super Cool!

Thank you for listening to me.

Love You.

Don’t forget me and I’ll catch up with you next week.

Ciao!
