Ok. It’s time to discover what are the 2 topics of episode number six of Musitaly.
This time the songs are about Sex & Food! And yes! You understood well. I said SEX. And when I say SEX, I mean SEX. Oh Yeah!
The three songs about Sex are very iconic in Italy and are sung by three superpowered women.

Ok. Let’s start with the first one. They are “Il Genio” an electro-pop duo from the wonderful region of Apulia. Do you remember Puglia? The region of Lu Sole, Lu Ientu, Lu Mare.
The duo was made up of Gianluca De Rubertis and Alessandra Contini.
They no longer sing together despite they are still in the music industry.
BTW there is no official information about the end of the project “Il Genio” even if the last record together was released in 2013.
Gianluca De Rubertis has in fact released his last record “La Violenza della Luce” for the label Sony in 2020.
Alessandra Contini, on the other hand, released her indie-pop record “Continentale” for the label UMA Records in 2019.
Anyway… in the year 2008 the talented duo Il Genio achieved incredible success thanks to this song named Pop Porno. Just to give you an idea of what I am talking about… Consider that in 2008 some people were still using MySpace and Facebook started being used by many other people. The TV was still the main vehicle for promoting everything and also thanks to their participation in a famous TV Show about football this song reached a huge audience… “Altri Tempi” and this song was played everywhere.
Part 2: Spliff
So… Where were you in 2008? No rush. Take your time and then let me know.
In the meantime, follow me and let’s enter the time machine, we fly to 1982. I was 3 years old at that time and I don’t remember anything.
I swear. I remember absolutely nothing but since I started listening to music and then started working for a radio station more or less 10 years later, I learnt that Italian producers in the 80s did a lot of amazing things. Even singing in English.
E No… I am not talking about famous people of that time such as Toto Cutugno, Albano e Romina, Eros Ramazzotti or Celentano. They did great things but in a different area.
Folks (people), I am talking about the “Italo Disco”. Have you ever heard of this kind of music? Unfortunately, it vanished in the early 90s with newborn musical genres such as Italo-House and Italo-Dance. #sadness
Anyway, the peculiarity of Italo-Disco was the use of electronic drums, drum machines and synthesizers. And, one more thing, most of the time the Italian productions were sung in English. Amazing, no?
I give you some example:
- Baltimora with the song Tarzan Boy. They are from Milan.
- Gazebo with the lovely song I like Chopin. He grew up in Rome.
- Ken Laszlo with Hey Hey Guy. He comes from Florence
- Scotch with the unforgettable song Disco Band. They come from Bergamo.
- Valerie Dore with More Than a Kiss. She comes from Milan too.
And believe me, the list is longer than this.
Ok.. as you should know… when I say something it’s because there is always a reason behind it. And today there are no exceptions. Pazienza, Baby. Be Patient and Trust Me.
You must know that many Italo-Disco productions were produced in Germany. And that is exactly where the next group comes from.
They are the Spliff, a German band that hit their greatest success with the song “Carbonara”. This song is influenced by Italo-Disco and it is sung in both Italian and German languages.
Another thing to know is that at the time was common for German people to travel to Italy for a couple of reason:
1st The Deutsche Mark was worther than Italian Lira
2nd Italy is a beautiful country
3rd The Italian food is delicious
I remember some areas of Northern Italy completely dedicated to German Tourists. Basically, all the indications were written in Italian and German. And I am not talking about Sud Tyrol. I am talking about some town in the North-East area of Italy.
BTW: Bella La Lu. I’m sorry for everything.
Ok… This song is about a trip to Italy in the 80s. This guy doesn’t have much money and after meeting a girl he sings he only can offer her a Carbonara and a Coke.
Please, pay attention to the lyrics because the singer mentions a lot of Italian stereotypes such as the Mafia, the Red Brigades, the Italian Motorway and so on.
Part 3: Patty Pravo
Ah, Guys …I don’t think it’s necessary to say something obvious …But just in case …if you ask me for a chicken carbonara, then I’ll call the police.

Ok… This is time for the third song and for Nicoletta Strambelli.
If you are wondering who she is, don’t worry, many don’t know that name and that woman unless you introduce her with her stage name Patty Pravo.
She is one of the most iconic Italian singers and if you think she was born in 1948 and is still active in the music industry.. well… I think you will appreciate her in the same way.
During her long career, she easily jumped (switched) from one musical genre to another. She was one of the protagonists during the era of Italian bit, for example, then pop-rock, then again the protagonist of Italian classical music again and then Pop. So… we could compare her to a camaleonte. (chameleon in English)
Today, I am introducing her with one of the most famous Italian songs: Pensiero Stupendo, Wonderful Thought.
And… guess .. this is the episode about Sex and Food. We have already listened to two songs and the last one was about food. So, what about this one?
Exactly! But the beautiful thought ain’t about that one. The beautiful thought for the protagonist of the song is.. an idea to have sex with another girl and a man.
And Yes! This song has never been censored because it is not explicit. This song jokes with the words leaving the listener all the imagination.

Vabbè… For the fourth song I chose a song that has nothing to do with food but the music video of the song, yes it does. A lot. In fact, there are a couple of parodies of this video. Use your favourite search engine to search for “Coez – La Musica non c’è” Parody.
This song is actually about a person in love with someone else. But it is not clear if they are at the end of the romance. He is in love with her but in the meantime, she started a new relationship. BTW I think it’s sad in both ways too.
This guy, Coez, the real name of Silvano Albanese, is an Italian rapper and he is still in activity despite the Trap trend in the Belpaese.

Part 5: Donatella Rettore
Eh Vabbe’… “Sei Bella che la Musica non c’è” which means something like your beauty is speechless.
I would like to talk more about the feeling of this song but I think it’s better to go straight to the last song because this is Donatella Rettore’s turn.
First. Who is she? She is another iconic Italian singer with a long career.
Second. What’s the name of her song today? Kobra
And do you know what Kobra means? Of course, you know what it means. It has the same meaning and pronunciation in both languages, Italian and English.
As we know Kobra is a snake and I don’t know in your language what you call that part of men’s body, but in Italy, one of the words to refer to that part is … Kobra.
Like Patty Pravo’s song we listened to a few minutes ago, Donatella Rettore also talks about something super sex but never mention either the specific word or the implicit words.
This song was released in 1980 and I think it is still relevant because of its winking meaning and timeless sound.
